My Gen-1 High Point 9mm carbine is one of the most reliable firearms I own. Zero FTF/FTE issues with probably close to 5k rounds through it over 17 years.

This is a very strange thread. For a lot of reasons.

Seemed like it. Consider the statement retracted.

Before, I would break the gun down first, clean it, and make sure to put it back together properly. Also, try a new magazine. 90% of my feeding problems are magazines.

Feeding problems I can handle(when I can disassemble the gun).

Although I haven't tried it, I also know how to modify Hi-Point magazines(clips) to make them feed better.

It really like something broke in there. My initial impression was the firing pin, but I have been thinking on it, and if the firing pin broke upon impact with the primer. Wouldn't the round still discharge anyway? Even with a partial impact? Unless...maybe the first round had partially broken it, just enough to take the power out of it's impact, and then it snapped upon striking the second primer. Because the second round's primer was scratched diagonally and ever so slightly indented. I mean only a small hint of indentation, a skosh. It was nowhere near a full hit from the firing pin.

I am about to give Buck_Rogers method a try, maybe this will get me in there.

I don't think the OB board is pretentious. It's just that you're looking for praise for some half cocked idea you came up with. For whatever reason, you're trying to spend the absolute minimum on a "safe" when there are very reasonably priced models that will do the job 10x better. You being a dumbass doesn't make me pretentious.

Not looking for "praise" as you put it. I was being ever so slightly facetious about the "pretentious" remark. I also wasnt calling you out specifically.

Despite my sarcasm, yes, this board does get pretentious regarding certain things.

For a small example:

I know we have all seen enough debates threads from Glock vs 1911 owners, and 9mm vs .40 fanboys, to write responses for almost any Outdoor Board "regular" on either subject if a new thread was started. Also, almost all of the "regulars" could impersonate other "regular"'s stances on these subjects so well, that everyone else on the board would not know the difference between the two. Both sides, especially in the Glock vs 1911 debates, are very pretentious.

Pretentious:

Yeah, no pretentiousness EVER happens around here.

Are you going to be keeping it on a 7' tall shelf to appease the wife, or are you going to use it as a small safe to hold a gun that you will take out in case of emergency? If the latter, inside of a locked ammo box 7' high on a shelf is a terrible idea.

I currently keep the gun in a wooden box on the lower shelf of my bedside table when we are in the bedroom. It is the perfect height for me to roll over and grab. When I leave for the day, it goes with me.

As far as the 7 ft shelf is concerned. I just plan on keeping most of my ammo and non "self-defense" handguns in there. I am currently attempting to figure out a "safer" way to hide the gun by the bed. I am thinking about setting up a holster to hold it on the backside of the head board.

Outside of my carry gun, a few .22 rifles, and 2 shotguns. I now have a compact and easy to carry box holding all of my handguns and ammo. Something a thief can simply walk out of my house carrying. So as to break into at his own convenience and leisure. It's a felon's perfect present, full of crime committing goodies, one that I gift wrapped just for him.

I love my wife, but pregnancy has dialed her hysteria levels to over 9,000.

I'm on Workman's Comp, until I finish being a full time student, and a volunteer youth pastor. Reasonably priced is a relative term for me.

I want a "real" safe, and I have a plan to get one. It will just be awhile. Because once I start saving, I'm not going to buy the first decent one I can afford. I'm going to wait and get the one I want.

Thank you for your input, DSD. Sorry if you thought I was, I dunno, being a brat about all this? Wasn't my intention. Was trying to be a little funny through sarcasm, relay some information, and get some questions answered.

Simpler and cheapest way would've been to screw a $2 cabinet handle on the door of the original safe he purchased, if the only problem was the door being hard to open.

I still have it actually, haven't had time to run to Wal-Mart( ) yet.

The thing is, the ammo box was a fair amount cheaper, has the same wall thickness, and I already had the red lock that is on it laying around. I bought the ammo box to save a few bucks, while still getting the wife to shut up(*1), and it actually holds a lot more stuff. So now I can keep all of ammo in one place. Which is much more convenient for me.

*1: Can we all agree on the following?

Anything that gets the wife to stop her nagging, and shuts her up, is a good thing to pursue. No matter how much it makes you look like a cheap arse.

Also, to the people dogging me. At least I made 1 good decision yesterday, so I am not a total loss as a gun owner.

Using a Hi-Point .380 as part of a deal to get my hands on that S&W M&P Shield. I am loving this gun so far. Shoots like a dream for me.

I couldn't agree more. Give a follow up on whether or not that trick works on getting the pistol apart.

Couple of random observations on this:

1) Hi-Points are hideously ugly guns, showing absolutely no sense of aesthetics. Even a Glock looks like a fabulous piece of precision work done by a master craftsman in comparison. I'm not sure how much you'd have to pay me for me to take it.
That being said, most people with experience with them, grudgingly admit they tend to be reliable. And in a moment of need, a functioning Hi-Point beats a $2000 1911 if it fails to feed the first round...
and everyone says their customer service is desperately helpful. So send it in, get the one perk they offer. May as well.

2) I've dealt with the hormonally instable new mama before. Yes, any tactical surrender that results in peace is a strategic victory. And by now, you have probably learned that your options are to surrender or suffer nuclear holocaust. So the ammo can is a nifty means of achieving peace.

3) Zastava in 7.62 Tokarev; several things.
Tokarev rounds are small and hot. Recoil is maybe a little lighter than 9mm, comfortable. Blast is significantly louder than a 9mm, you get an impressive fireball and boom. The round will go through things even a .357 will just dent, so be aware of anything you are shooting at, as it will likely pass through it.

Unlike the other Tokarevs, the Zastava has a longer grip, and longer magazines. For all other Toks, you can interchange stuff (Poles, Russians, Chinese, Romanians, etc), but with these, not the mags or grips. Keep that in mind in case you browse around for spare mags.

I THINK the barrels, slides, and springs etc will. I believe there's a possible difference with the hammer assembly, you might want to research it- the assembly comes out with no problems, it's all self-contained, and just lifts out.

Both the Yugos (Zastava) and the Chinese also made 9mm barrels, and the conversion is simply to swap the barrel, and bushing if needed. I have a Chicom model in 9mm, all it required was the barrel. Magazines for 7.62 work for me just fine, and it's a nice shooter. If you decide you like the gun, it might be worth exploring picking up a barrel somewhere, for possible cheaper shooting (9mm is cheaper now).
