My buddy killed one in S. Arkansas about 10 years ago. Same story. The wildlife and fisheries came to inspect and determined it was a hermaphrodite, although it had no visible male parts. It was a massive deer. According to the WLF agent, it took part in no sex games, only ate. It had, I think, 23 points and very similar looking (i.e. gross/non-typical) and in velvet as well. Very cool.
ETA: the WLF agent at the time told him of all the deer in Arkansas, the odds suggested maybe only one other in the entire state with that condition.
