Got my 12 year old step son in a stand for the first time by himself. Ladder stand on small lane. 20ga slug. Told him if he can see it he can reach it. He has the green light for a doe or rack buck ( he's killed several including a decent 7pt). Will be his first kill with a shotgun and solo

I'm set up about 200 yards from him in a ladder in some willows on the edge of a big oak ridge. Rem 700 280.

I'm barely hunting. On pins and needles nervous waiting for him to shoot

Just completed a land speed record for getting undressed and out of a stand. Broke my cardinal rule of no having coffee in the morning after whiskey nights. Thankfully I wear a wife beater for layers.

Picture says it all. Cold and nothing moving. Looking over 2 heavily used trails and new rubs. 300 yards off feed but haven't seen one in a week. Confidence low.

Back in the stand for an evening hunt. Have my 6yr old sitting with me in a box stand looking down a road and the 12yr old is in another box stand guarding a pile of corn.

I've taught this kid all I can about gun safety and have supervised him for years with them but my stomach is in knots knowing he is alone with a loaded gun. I gave him slugs hoping it would help him resist temptation to shoot a bird

Teaching gun safety is one thing. Teaching responsibility is another. If you've taught him to handle firearms responsibly, he'll be fine.

And I like the choice of words "guarding a pile of corn"

In Dentville, Ms
Got my 6 yr old son with me for the first time this year. In shooting house on gas line. Carried him and let him shoot his 410 before we got in stand hoping it would satisfy his dissire to shoot something. Nope... He is chomping at the bit to shoot this bird thats by the stand. Don't know how long I can hold him back??

Teaching them gun safety and responsibility goes way beyond being in the stand. What you have taught him carries on to everything. I first let my oldest boy start hunting alone at around 12 with a single shot rifle with a hammer. I felt as if there was no possible way for an accidental discharge unless the hammer was cocked. I also taught him not to cock the hammer until he had the barrel out the window of the shootbox and the deer in the crosshairs..

I went slipping today. It was tough because it's so dry, there was more mud than water. I bumped a couple deer, sat for an hour, then continued on. I stumbled on a slough that had several wood ducks sitting in it. As I approached, the ducks left then all of a sudden a doe took off on the slough's edge. It slowed down for a second and the .243 started barking. Went about 10-15 yards.

Was the biggest PIA getting out. I'll never leave my sled again. Took a little less than three hours. Damn hip boots would get stuck in the mud and my feet would want to come out.

Very gratifying! You'd swear I just killed the world record.

Dat shot placement doe.
