Not surprising. Totally legal. But once again makes you doubt their promise to "make things whole".

BP Buying Scientists

The point is that in an unprecedented event with wide ranging repercussions, the company appears to be more concerned with legal defense (which they have every right) instead of making sure this knowledge and research is used to help correct any problems and possibly warn the public on long-term issues.
They don't want any information shared for 3 years. And they are trying to contract entire university research departments.
I understand they have a responsibility to protect their shareholders. But they go on TV and print saying how they are with and will do whatever they can to make this right.
Making this right also involves making sure research is shared and discussed. Because there is so much of this that nobody has ever studied.
It shouldn't be hidden in a lawyers office.

I know it looks bad, but they have to do this. Making people whole is one thing, but just giving money away to every lawyer and group that decided to file a lawsuit or claim is another.
They are going to have to defend themselves in some cases.
Of course they will try to screw some folks too, so I am not saying BP is without fault.

That's your opinion.

You can thank lawyers filing class action lawsuits for that. Many industries have to protect themselves from litigation, and unfortunately lawyers have driven the costs of business through the roof because of the threat of such lawsuits. The corporation has an obligation to protect it's shareholders and this might be an example of that. BP might not be totally blameless here in their actions but this might be necessary from a shareholder perspective.

Yep. I would think the hiring of scientist and phd engineering types might be especially helpful for the fights that are sure to come with the other partners with the well and rig and maybe even against the gov. who might try to stop them from ever drilling anywhere near the U.S. You never know.
I would think they are going to get some pretty big time economist on the payroll to for the lawsuits/claims by states, counties, cities, etc.

quote:Sharing information is a concept that went away when the Obama administration sent Justice Department criminal prosecuters to the GoM to look for things to put people in jail for. They did this on about Day 3 after the rig sunk. At that point goodwill is gone, and Bp must lawyer up. Any good defense attorney will tell you the first thing you do when you even think you might, maybe be in legal jeopardy is SHUT UP!

This is the correct answer. People will file all kinds of lawsuits and more than a few will be simply frivolous. Happens all the time in environmental law.
I know of a case where a plant downriver had a small leak of a substance that, while not poisonous, still had to be reported. Within two weeks there were half a dozen lawsuits from locals claiming they felt sick and could smell the foul odor. These people happened to live upwind and the chemical in question has no odor.
BP will be dealing with shite like this for years, they have to get their legal ducks in order.

The Plaintiffs' lawyers have been "buying" experts since the moment this started. All those bubbas doing the "particle analysis" to talk about how much oil is flowing? Working for the plaintiffs' lawyers.
