What oil is used to protect wood chairs that are left outside? Need to refinish some chairs and need to get something to seal and protect unpainted chairs.

Use water-repellant stain like you would on a deck. Don't use an oil based one as it will eventually mildew. Also don't use a pressure washer when cleaning them. Use an oxygen bleach.

Why not? What is the problem with that?

it will erode the wood grain over time and make your chairs appear splotchy.

It's actually a much more complicated question than it seems. I was recently working on a project and had the same questions. I'll try to find the thread on the OB.

The consensus was Waterlox but it's a bit pricey and hard to find. I ended up using a locally made spar varnish I got from a local hardware store and it worked well.

Are the chairs going to be exposed to the elements or just outside but under cover?
