Why is this scenario awkward?

you run into someone you haven't seen in a few years in the mall or grocery store
you catch up with them for 2-3 minutes then part ways
a few minutes later you pass them again, and it's awkward
why is that? what is the science behind it? what exactly is that awkward feeling anyway?

How many times did you sleep with him?

I always just assumed I was awkward and that was it.

Maybe because your only intention was to

catch up with them for 2-3 minutes then part ways

Because you feel like you should stop and say hi, but you dont, because you both realize after catching up for a few minutes that you don't give a shite enough about each other to expend the effort to say hello again

Similar scenario:
I'm walking into a building, and the person ahead of me holds the door open. I say thanks. We then go through another set of doors, and the person ahead of me holds that door open as well. Do I need to say thanks again, or did my earlier acknowledgement satisfy that previous action and all future door openings?

but that's what i'm saying, there wouldn't be a reason to say "hi" since you just talked a few minutes ago. but passing them again, you don't know what to say. "you again..." is about all you can think

You just ask why they are stalking you..and watch their reaction.

"Haven't seen you in years, yet here we meet twice in one day! What are the chances..." ::Keeps walking forward::

I just nod my head after the second time

I know of such a feeling unless I knew them really well and there had been no issues in previous dealings back when.....

Say "bye" on the second passing

I find a head nod to be sufficient.
