Why is the Indy 500 not as big a deal as it used to be?

I remember it being a really big deal as a kid. Everybody knew who Johnny Rutherford and AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti were. ABC would show it on tape delay in prime time, and everybody watched it.

Now it's like your surfing channels and "hey, the Indy 500 is on." Then you go do something else.

There is no potential for growth and it’s mostly beloved by certain regions, not the entire country.

More choices to watch now instead of speeding cars going round-and-round with the occasional fiery crash. Bores the frick out of me.

The split hurt open wheel racing bad.
Also, you used to have more chassis and engine options. Except for engines, it's a spec series now.

Indycar has a shite TV deal and shite marketing team.

Sometimes it's hard to find race times or channels and sometimes its on USA which isn't carried by all providers anymore.

Formula 1 had drive to survive and the early race times exploded it's popularity in the US. You can actually watch a race and not piss your whole day away watching TV.

Seems like a shift in sports viewing is taking place as well. Seems like less and less people want to watch four and five hour events.

So true…it was a huge deal when there was only a few TV channels and no internet. Very popular in the 70’s and early 80’s. I grew up in Kentucky and went to the race once. It was packed with fans and the cars were unbelievably loud.

It seems like racing in general is less popular now than it used to be. Nascar was extremely popular 20+ years ago.

The creation of IRL splitting off from “Indy Car” and the separate CART series was set the downfall in motion.

Internal combustion motors? Of course its going to be marginalized.

The Indy 500 will be back the first time someone whips around the track at a blazing 100MPH in an electric.

Until then, it'll be treated like midget wrestling.
