Why is the demographic so slanted in professional and college basketball?

I'm hesitant to post anything that could be construed as racist, that by no means is the intent of this post. I'm curious as to what the reasons in the overwhelmingly slanted demographic are in the opinion of the OT.

There seems to be a racial mindset with NBA and college basketball teams. European basketball teams with a much smaller pool of players to choose from routinely defeat US teams in exhibition games or play well against NBA all stars in the Olympics. Yet basketball in the US is very stacked racially. Is it a mindset that when choosing players that a black player with similar statistics is always going to be better than a white player or are there other reasons why the sport is so predominately composed of black athletes on US teams?

From a marketing standpoint, you would think that if the talent were remotely similar that teams would load up with white players. Let's face it, the Celtics of the 1980's, whether by design or not, with the large number of white players on the team increased NBA viewership among those who had not previously been NBA fans, in large part due to the racial make-up of the team. Bottom line is that from a business point of view, profitability is the primary motive for team owners. Participating in championships helps ensure profitability, but only 25% of the teams in the league stand a realistic chance of winning a championship. If that is the case, why not load up your team with players that increase your viewership and attendance? Since we don't really see that, I have to assume that there is a huge talent difference in black basketball players and white basketball players. Either that or the viewership is so predominately the black audience that there is no incentive to structure a team to increase white viewership. However, with the television audience in the US being about 70% white, I'm surprised you don't see an unspoken targeting of demographics within teams to increase viewership.

Basketball is really cheap to play. All you need is a ball and a court and nearly every inner city neighborhood has a public court. It's an easier sport for poor kids to learn and play.

Could be as simple as interest and where people live

Basketball probably gets most of its talent from cities where football is a mix of cities and country boys

Phil Jackson wrote about this decades ago. He said the white kid typically grows up to focus on a team effort game while to black kid typically learns to play for highlights.

Why not just ask why there aren’t more white American basketball players? You didn’t have to type all of that out

Fair point, I tend to try to go through arguments on both sides of a question and then like to throw them both out there to hear how others agree with either side of reasoning.

Im sure an nba owner and coach want to hire some white guys who arent that good at basketball to get a few weirdos to watch their game while losing a ton of fans watching because the team sucks.

Jfc this thread is horrible

And much like Dominican kids playing baseball, they learn an awful lot of bad habits in an attempt to stand out.

Could be that the nature of the sport caters to extremely elite athletes having the most success, thus more black people.

White kids play travel ball all year round while black kids play AAU and school basketball all year round.

Its simple. Black folks are more athletic. Their body typically is built for basketball. Longer arms and legs and they are faster.
