Why is "Martian" spelled with a "t"?

If a Martian is an inhabitant of Mars, shouldn't it be spelled "Marsian?"

Just a wild guess but since Mars was the Roman god of war, I'd think it might have something to do with latin grammar.

Because Brett Farve's ancestor misspelled it in the First Edition of the English Oxford dictionary.
