Isn't he extremely overqualified to work at the lower-tiered NBC? The other two...same thing. I know he is from NOLA originally, but this dude did the WGN news for years, along with the other gigs. He definitely brings professionalism to an otherwise average news anchor gig in this city. Good for 33 for nabbing him.

*ETA -- still, I do not get why he's here in BR at a news station that is not very well-respected, viewership-wise. Something must have not gone his way somewhere and somehow.

Cocaine is a bad drug.
Fred Hickman was money-pretty much as good as it gets.

Yeah I figured. I put 2 and 2 together. Guess it's time to Google although his wiki said nothing about anything very negative.

This is the equivalent to someone like John O'Hurley doing play-by-play for Nichols State.

If you are referring to college-aged posters, you are dead right. Otherwise, he's very well-known among us old baws.

Baw.

If you had cable in the 80s you do. His show with nick charles on cnn was the the best late night sports show before Patrick/Olbermann took over espn

Yeah I mean listening to/watching him on BR's last choice for NEWS is like watching Mike Trout playing a rehab stint in Modesto. He's THAT good and the other news people are typical young and attempting-to-move-up/just passing through types. Hickman, demons or not, could have been picked to do CBSevening News when Dan Rather retired and I would not have been shocked. He is solid.

From "Deadspin":

• SportsCenter anchor John Anderson still begins his top 10 plays segment by saying "Number 10...Fred." This is an inside joke done to pay homage to Hickman's tenure. The origins of it come from when one PA wrote out the top 10 play list by giving name indications on each play. Number 10, in this case, was given to Hickman and marked "Fred" on the prompter. Hickman, in turn, read "Number 10...Fred " on air. Anderson supposedly asked producers if he should continue with his Hickman joke after he was gone. The answer was a resounding "yes."

Yes it is and I googled those words and came up with this 1993 article below about a coke habit he had before that even. WHat has he done to us lately?

LINK

quote:

Wearing shades and a rumpled shirt, fumbling with a pile of carry-on luggage, he appears to be a man running on empty, a man who still isn't completely sold on the idea of flying with a 2-month-old baby.

But compared to how he might have looked eight years ago, Fred Hickman looks like a million bucks.

Were this 1985, Hickman would have had even less sleep. After his show, he would have gone off and snorted a few lines of cocaine.

Hickman, 36, one of the shining lights of network sports television, once had a serious habit. It peaked in 1985, while he was working as a sportscaster in Detroit.

Back then, he figured a toot a day would keep the demons away.

"It was one of those things where - I don't like to make excuses about it - but where I was a young kid and I was in a city that I didn't particularly like," he says. "It was a bad choice of career moves."

JESUS...and this dude is working at THIS station? I mean he had to do more than get hooked on coke back in the 1980's. He's thrived wherever he went.

Some suggest that Hickman can be an acquired taste for management.

Evidently they just redid that entire station. Debuting tonight as far as I know.

Hope they turn that shitstorm around.

How did they land him, though? There's no way they can even cut a quarter of a slice into what he was making just as, for instance, the anchor on the WGN News at 9.

Easily the best sports news on TV. They were great. Gave you the goods without the self-serving catch phrase nonsense of ESPN idiots today.

And they were better than Patrick and Olbermann.
