Why is Entergy my only choice for electricity? How is that not a monopoly?

When I lived on the north shore, I could pick between them and a power company out of Washington Parish.
Believe it or not, the Washington Parish provider was heads and shoulders better from my experience.

It is a regulated monopoly...

Because grid infrastructure is ridiculously expensive.

I didn't even know there were areas where you had options for your electricity services.
Entergy isn't the only electricity company that works as a monopoly. Any where you live that only has one electricity provider.. That electricity provide is working as a monopoly.

I remember someone explaining to me one time that all of the power poles or transformer stations are co-Ops?

Entergy sent me a text and told me that my power was down. It showed up that way on the app as well. My power never went down. I think those new meters they installed have more problems than they are admitting.

And one with shady billing practices and an unreliable network.

1st question for me when house hunting...Entergy or Demco?

It’s the same thing here in Louisville. We only have LG&E and they gouge the frick out of folks. They’re asking for a 20% raise this year.

Typically true for all areas. It is a government regulated monopoly. One exception is Texas where one company manages the distribution network, but your Power Company can be many different choices and they have several different rates and programs for different rates.
Now you could get stuck with this option where you pay the spot rate for electricity which was a one point 6.88 a kWH. That price can fluctuate down to almost free. But Jesus, 6.88 a KWH is an arse raping.

As I wrote yesterday to someone, the same thing happened to us several times before (and that was before new meters).

I don’t think so.
And yes, it is a regulated monopoly. The catch for them is that they have to serve every potential customer in their jurisdiction and treat all customers equal.
The reason for these monopolies historically makes some sense, as they didn’t want multiple companies investing in all of the infrastructure.

Who said that it isn't a monopoly?

Back before digital metering, the regulated monopoly was put in place to control quality and the number of power lines strung hither and fro. There's no real reason for it, now, though, as they can do with power what they already do with phones.
In theory, you have some control over it via the public service commission. They are usually the puppets of the power and gas companies in most states.

It is a monopoly, intentionally.

Slemco is our only option where I am.
Their rates and service are just awesome.
