To put a tax lien on you when you don't pay your bill.

I mean, I used to think memorizing my number was important, but what is the point when companies will ask for a copy of the card regardless of whether or not you have already provided the number?

The funniest part of that is my card issued in 1964-5 states on the face: "not to be used for identification purposes".

Things change, and not always for the better, especially when govt is involved.

Some people use other people's SSN to get the utilities turned on then never pay the bill. The utility then goes after the wrong person for payment.

Social Security Admin is govt though

Electric Company is almost essentially govt, a public utility. Elected or appointed (depending on state) Utility Commission and Commissioner to oversee electric utility companies.

When the SS registry was started in the 40's, the whole Nazi Identity Papers thing was still fresh in everyone's minds. The US Government swore up and down that the Social Security system would NEVER be utilized to identify citizens. They were lying their asses off just like happened recently with the Healthcare Bill. They know damn well that a few generations down the road no one will remember and they can do what they want.
