Not an expert on the topic but I had a professor who was who said when interviewing them they would prefer to be called

1) By the tribe name if you know it
2) Indian
3) Native-American

Why? I don't know. But that's what she said. She has a BA from Vandy, 2 MAs.. 1 from BYU and one from ND, and a Doctorate from ND so that makes her a lot smarter than me.
