Why Do Certain Teachers Insist They Be Referred to as "Educators"?

I'm in town visiting my father and went with him to a monthly city hall meeting. He's the city attorney for one of our great Louisiana towns (small town, nothing fancy).

One of the topics on the agenda was some proposed bond measure that involved funding a certain project at the local high school. In response to the proposal, my father just had a few questions to ask the proponents to clarify some particulars about how the money was to be spent.

A 40-something black woman takes the podium as the purported expert on the proposal. To clarify that she was a teacher at the local school, my father asked her if she was a teacher, simply so he would know who he was talking to. She replied tersely 'No, I am an edu-ca-tor'.

I think he felt bad, but he couldn't help but give a slightly audible chuckle. This woman then proceeded to ramble incoherently for 20 minutes about how the 'edu-ca-tors' help the 'yooths' and so-forth, not really leaving anyone with a better understanding of what the measure would include.

Anyway, this is not the first time I've heard some of our finest Louisiana public school teachers refer to themselves as educators, as if it was some sacred title that required special certification beyond the likely low-bar to teach at some of our schools.

Have you heard this before?

If we had fewer ed-u-cay-tors then the yutes would be more smarter.

Don't know, don't care. But let's not turn this into a "pay raise for teacher" thread. Give me summers, winter break, and spring break and then we can talk about pay raises for teachers/educators.

Because "sexual predator" just doesn't have that prestigious ring to it.

It's pretty common within the education profession for teachers to be referred to as "educators". This is not something limited to public schools

It's like pilots in the Navy referring to themselves as "Aviators"

Why do certain french fry sackers want to be called "Chefs?"

I have a shite ton of friends and family that are teachers. Never heard any of them say something like that. I've also never heard any of them complain about their job or pay like people on here make them out to do.

The more annoying trend is to refer to kindergarteners as scholars rather than students. That's a thing.

There's a specialized Louisiana licence plate that say "Educators". I laugh every time I see one. A lot of teachers really have an overinflated sense of self importance. It's commical.

Just like these English 101 teachers that get pissy if you don't call them "professor".

I'm a teacher. Most of us who are not insecure really don't give a shite what you call us. Just pay us well enough to live in the middle class (which I most definitely have) and resources to be productive (iffy, but can't be perfect).

That said, I will do anything to help a student but I don't live to work. I work to live. You couldn't pay me to go to one of those BS weekend conferences when I could be spending time with my wife or friends. The ones who need to be "educators" are the ones who eat sleep and breathe academia. They probably have their own research going on too.

The only time I've ever been called an "educator" was when the principal or administrator had some cheesy speech at a meeting about how important we are, to which most of us replied "stop this BS let us do our job and go home."

This, but unfortunately, too any lazy slobs want to be called educator without working a lick.

I'm also a teacher FWIW

Not trying to be a spelling nazi here, but I think you meant "yooofs".

Oh, and as a former TEACHER, I know exactly what you're talking about. Ironically, those that cling to that "ed U ca TOR" title are generally the least capable of the lot.

As a teacher, this is the correct answer.

When you see a news item where some weird grown woman banged the entire teenage football team, they never refer to her as an "educator". Stigma's a bitch.

It's because they aren't doing anything you would call teaching.
