I've heard bits and pieces of him in other biographies and I just got a biography of him but I think mine's George C Marshall. Soldier, statesman, and leader, he hasn't been given the credit he truly deserves for winning world war 2. He managed to be non partisan through being stuck in Washington DC (he very much wanted to be more hands on in the war but he knew he was needed in his current position).

In world War 1, an officer was asked if he would like Marshall as a subordinate, and the officer responded, "of course, but honestly I'd prefer to serve under him."

Also a contemporary said "he was the greatest human being who ever became a great man."

I'm sure in reading the biography I'll find some questionable stuff. :(

But anyway, Whose your favorite figure.

Let me rephrase. When I've read about the founding fathers and the biographies about them, Jefferson always came across as a modern day political. He was brilliant and his political ideas were great but I'm not sure his actions backed up his words.

George Washington is by far my favorite Founding Father.

Jim Bridger

quote:

Jim Bridger had a strong constitution that allowed him to survive the extreme conditions he encountered walking the Rocky Mountains from what would become southern Colorado to the Canadian border. He had conversational knowledge of French, Spanish and several native languages. He would come to know many of the major figures of the early west, including Kit Carson, George Armstrong Custer, Hugh Glass, John Fremont, Joseph Meek, and John Sutter.

quote:

Bridger was among the first white men to see the geysers and other natural wonders of the Yellowstone region. In the winter of 1824-1825, Bridger gained fame as the first European American to see the Great Salt Lake (though some now dispute that status in favor of Étienne Provost), which he reached traveling in a bull boat.
