Also, depending on your attic insulation situation, you get free heating from the sun in the summer since most attics are hotter than a witch’s caldron.

Mine is literally outside and no issues. Idk how hot water freezes? But you have to keep water moving through your heater just like you have to keep the rest of your water moving.

You think that is stupid. One time doing work for the fed at a govt building, they wanted us to put a 100 gallon hot water heater up above the ceiling in the bathroom. frickIN REGARDED. Of course we talked the dumb sum bitches into putting it on the floor adjacent to the bathroom, so it can be easily worked on. I'm sure you would also have to tell those guys to wipe their arse, otherwise they wouldn't do it either.

I had never heard of water heaters in the attic until Texas got hammered with that cold blast a year or two ago,

Still boggles my mind.

hot waterheaters upstairs

Putting a hot water heater upstairs or in the attic should be against the law/building code. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

The lines coming from the water heater in the attic freeze.

My water heater is in the basement.
It shite the bed and leaked out a couple of years ago.
It took me a couple of hours to vacuum up the water, and I was actually happy to do it bc I just kept thinking about what a mess it would've been if it was in the attic.
Same here. Me and a very good friend of mine, had the exact same thing happen. The difference was, mine was in the basement on a concrete slab. His was was in the attic. Cost me about $1000. He had $50K in damage.
