Apparently people do steal bee hives. I have a registered cattle brand and the brand commission says it is also valid identification on bee hives.

Huge business where I live. Like 50 mil a year. In a very rural setting. Extremely rare honey though

The bees pretty much stay in their hives at night. They'll light you up if you fool with the hives after dark, though. Probably because predators (like bears) that prey on bee hives are nocturnal. Plus, the older more pissed off bees are all in the hive at night, whereas they're out foraging during daylight hours
