I get them from time to time. I first got them when I was a teenager. I would use a water pick to work them out.
Now, I have built up a tolerance to where I can squeeze my tonsils with one finger without gagging. I will do it while brushing my teeth.
I usually get them when I'm sick. Like have a fever, soar throat, or something else. They're a symptom that you're not well.

My little brother had his tonsils removed Monday because of this a constant strep throat. Doc brought his into the room after he woke for us to see, the smell was horrific.
