Because you can't.

You are focusing purely on the supply side without any regard for what is creating the demand.

The pharma companies that pay doctors to push unneeded prescriptions on patients.

And the doctors that accept what is essentially bribery and a violation of the Hippocratic oath.

Some patients want to be drugged up but the vast majority just want to be safely cured. They are at the mercy of the doctors who make the diagnosis. But good luck finding a doctor who actually takes the hippocratic oath seriously.

Is it the patients for not heeding the doctor's advice that they're not indicated for their pain and Doctor shopping until they get one who will do it?

Yes. They should all OD so we can move forward.

Bitch arse, whiny patients who think every ache and pain needs an opioid.

Doctors who are too weak to say no.

I've had a wisdom tooth pulled, broken bones, kidney stones, a vasectomy and my gallbladder removed. Motrin was more than enough for every one of those things. People need to stop being such pussies.

I most definitely blame the individual. Alcohol and cigarettes are readily available and I do not hold the corner 7 11 as responsible for one's addictions.

Most people over the age of 12 know the health risks associated with alcohol and cigarettes, and the decision to use them is not based on a medical need. Many patients that are prescribed pain killers for the first time have no idea what the addictive properties of their medication may be and would be hard pressed to even name what drug they were taking without looking at the bottle, at least initially they are just following the orders of their physician.

Same here, have a drawer full of pain meds that were pr3ecrided and never used, figure someday if I am tapped out money wise I can hit the street corner with them.

I'm not sure about other States but AL has a Database that connects the Doctors and Pharmacies.

My 1st appointment with my PMD they had my previous 2 years prescriptions printed out.

They were asking me questions that they already knew the answers to.If I had withheld anything I would have been told to leave.

As stated before, it is so sad that people actually believe this. Do you people honestly believe doctors get a percentage of each prescription they write?

Anyone who uses this as an argument obviously has no knowledge of how the practice of medicine and reimbursements work. It is simply an easy way to pass blame on to the rich and powerful doctors because you heard someone else say it and it sounded like a good excuse.

It's not possible to have civil discourse with someone who simply states imaginary scenarios as fact.

Beyond all of that, you people do realize that just because a doctor prescribes a narcotic pain medicine a patient is under no obligation to take the medicine or even get the prescription filled. I suppose the evil doctor sneaks in your room at night and forces them down your throat too?

Excessive regulation. If you're in pain and something in your medicine cabinet will stop the pain, it makes sense to take it.

Doctors have to worry about the DEA raiding them so they don't have the freedom to experiment and find the best treatment for each patient. Which creates the exact opposite of the desired result. The legit market doesn't work and patients buy off the street.

ObamaCare. All these old African Americans are paying .00 copays for 120 Hydrocodone 10/325, 90 alprazolam 2mg and then getting all their grandchildren prescribed to vyvanse for 00. Copay and selling everything. (This is the truth behind RX abuse on the rise)

This.

I had a hand surgery for a Bennett's Fracture last year and was prescribed Oxy for pain. I had a prescription filled before the nerve block had even worn off and could feel my damn arm. I never felt the pain was significant enough to take it, just used ibuprofen.
