A combination of Coast Guard crewmembers and Good Samaritans rescued 35 people from a sinking houseboat on Lake Pontchartrain on Saturday night.
Around 9:30 p.m., the Coast Guard reported it received a mayday call from a houseboat that was taking on water in its engine room. The houseboat was tied to Causeway bridge pilings when a storm hit.
One Coast Guard crew -- with an assist from a Good Samaritan -- evacuated people from the boat while another crew pumped water out the boat and towed it to an area marina.
No injuries were reported.

a storm kicked up. The captain, who is also a friend, suggested they tie up to a set of pilings near the University of New Orleans and wait it out.
According to U.S. Coast Guard officials, the wind was blowing at 20 knots (23 mph) that night, churning the surface of the lake. The L'Attitude began rocking heavily in 3- to 4-foot surf.
"We've tied off at those pilings a lot of times before to go swimming or water skiing," Cull recalled Sunday night. "But the storm came so fast. It was the strongest wind we've ever had out there."
As the boat slammed into the pilings, one of them got stuck in the anchor port, damaging the hull. Waves crashed over the stern and flooded the motor. Then water poured into the engine room, cutting the power.

The captain needs to lose his license for thinking it was a good idea to tie up to a bridge during a storm
