Taking a family vacation to Orlando in the summer and wanted to take my son to the beach close by in the Tampa area. Which is better out of a Clearwater and St Petersburg?

St. Pete is closer to Treasure Island and Anna Maria Island which are both great places.

Would you rather be neighbors with old folks or Scientologists?

Siesta key is probably the best beach.

Boca Grand and siesta key are great. Drive a little further.

St. Pete is quicker from Orlando than Clearwater, also less crowded in my experience

I lived over there in the 90’s.

Clearwater is very crowded and commercialized. It’s really nice but impersonally don’t care for that vibe.

St Pete beach is much more residential but there are a few resorts as well. Nearby is Fort Desoto Park which is really nice. It’s a series of small islands that extended out into the mouth of Tampa Bay. It’s near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Fun place for a 12 year old.

South of Tampa Bay in Bradenton/Sarasota is definitely a little nicer. St. Pete Beach is a little more beach town, but like someone mentioned it is not far from Fort Desoto which is pretty awesome and has camping and decent fishing. It's also closer to St. Pete which has really grown with restaurants and you can catch a Rays game. Clearwater is much more touristy, but is very close to Caladesi State Park and Honeymoon Island which might be the two best beaches in Pinellas.

I usually stay in Indian Rocks Beach or Madeira Beach which are somewhat in the middle if we don't go south the Anna Maria.

Just FYI you can’t drink on the beach in Clearwater or St Pete. Madeira Beach is between them both. You can have cocktails or beer there on the beach.

Clearwater has the marine aquarium with the famous dolphins. Although one passed away not long ago. The new renovation of the aquarium is really really good. My kids beg to go to their summer camp now.

St Pete beach is close to Fort Desoto and Anna Maria Island. Both are places you need to visit if in the area. Hubbards runs the ferry to for a small fee to AMI. Last time we went they let my 6 year old son drive the barge.

As far as beaches Clearwater Beach has the white sand but my my it’s so crowded with no space to breathe. St Pete will be much more chill as in a different type of personalities but still crowded. Go early if you hit Ft Desoto or AMI.

I live just down the Street from the Snack Shack in Madeira if you need local places to go/do.

I agree Fort Desoto Park has the best beach if you dislike the commercialized Clearwater beach.

Treasure Island or Madeira beach are my 1 and 2, and they're adjacent.
St Pete beach just as good really.
I like the vibe of every one of these over clearwater.

If you’re willing to go to Tampa area, go a little further to siesta key it’ll be well worth it. Much nicer.

Clearwater is a zoo and so is Anna Maria island. Idk much bout st Pete beaches.

I’ve only been to Clearwater and it was last month. It seemed more family oriented with lots of kids having a fun time.
