When someone asks if I know someone I haven't met I say 'that name sounds familiar'

Does anyone else do this?
I might have never heard the name before.

All the time.
ETA: Does Scruffy have a downvote stalker?!
That is so exciting! It only took him 5 years to get one.

Sounds familiar

Definitely. It's kind of like "I don't know that name at all, but let's just keep this discussion moving forward and see if knowing this person is beneficial to me."

Sometimes I'll do say that when I know the person very well

If I'm enjoying the conversation, then sometimes I do just to keep them on track
If I'm not enjoying the conversation, I say no, and switch the topic immediately

Yea. But most people share common names. So your speaking the truth

"Oh you went to LSU? My cousin's friend's dad's uncle's son went there too! Tommy Smith, you must know him!"

I remember everyone's name I have met if it wasnt the first part of the convo.
I would know right away if I know that someone. I would never lie.

This OP and many of the first few responses belong in a Seinfeld episode

If you're including me in that, that's the nicest thing someone has said to me in a while.

Specifically you and the response directly after yours about "sometimes I say that when I know the person very well."
Might as well have been Jerry and George going back and forth.

That's the one I thought of too.

I say that or just pretend like I know who there are especially if someone says "do you know ____________? They told me they knew you from ___________" I usually say "Oh yeah! How are they?"

I'll say it with a very tiny thread of truth but if absolutely don't know I'll say so unless the context indicates it's someone I should know then I'll say something like "know of them" or "sounds familiar."
