From what I can tell they have three roles:
•Signal the start of a song
•Keep the beat/tempo with their hands
•Start/stop different sections of instruments

I can buy the need to start the song but shouldn't any musician who's worth a shite be able to handle the other two? Is there something I'm missing or are these guys just trying to justify their jobs?

You're missing a lot. How in the heck is a 150+ person orchestra supposed to stay on the same page without someone to look at to keep tempo?

On to the next question. These are easy. People are answering their own questions.

They bring out the musicianship of any group of musicians. A good conductor makes an amazing difference.

Retired Director of Bands at LSU, Frank Wickes is an amazing conductor.

It's too late by then. They already sound like shite and the audience is laughing at them.

We could use a conductor (admin) on the Music Board to contain the shitty trolls who are flooding the board with garbage

Having one board on TD be lawless like the Wild West was an interesting experiment, but I don't think it's worked

I mean, these people practice, right? I can see a conductor there as a coach. And I can see the need for someone to start the song. But once it's going, be a professional and handle your stuff.

It's basically like a football coach standing on the field and pointing at players to do things once the play is going on.

And I'm not talking about high school type bands or field bands where you can hear the beat. I'm talking about symphony orchestra type stuff.

The precision that an orchestra is aiming for is unreal. They aren't just trying to play a bunch of notes. And none of them can hear the fullness like the conductor in front can. And he makes tweaks to make sure the sound is perfect. It's incredible the comfort you feel with a great conductor who can speed you a up just a hair or soften certain sections.

Not to mention, that many professional musicians do not practice the specific pieces often. Unless you are in a major city, that is not paying the bills. The have a couple of rehearsals and then they go. So they are really relying on the conductor in those situations. And I know this because I lived with a semi-professional cellist at one point.

I wouldn't compare an orchestra playing Beethoven's 9th Symphony to a football team playing the game on the field. These are complex notes these guys are hitting and they have to hit their marks at just the right time, at exactly the same time. For well over an hour. This isn't just a 10-minute piece they are playing. A lot of these symphonies they play can run for 70-90 minutes....non-stop. You need to have someone directing the time, otherwise the whole thing will fall apart.
