What would you tell a girl who thinks it’s impossible for communism to happen in the U.S.?

I used to date a girl who immigrated from Cuba when she was a child. Surprisingly, she’s a Democrat and a supporter of big government social programs like the ones in Scandinavian countries. Most Cuban immigrants are Republican because they understand the dangers of government overreach due to the oppressive regime they lived under.

I think she’s just really naive and doesn’t understand the true motivations of a lot of progressive leftists. Anyway, she told me that she doesn’t believe leftists are moving us more and more towards socialism or communism. I was talking about the evil of communism , and she was like “that can’t happen here, right?”. I was dumbfounded and didn’t really know what to say except “Yes, it can”.
