What would the United States be like today if slavery had never occurred?

Serious question with no racist angle.
One can argue that we would be weaker today because American was built upon the backs of slaves, which in a morbid way made our infrastructure strong, citizens wealthy, and that resulted in power.
One can argue that since slavery diversity hasn't worked as well as envisioned and therefore everyone would be happier today if the slave trade had never occurred.
But that may not be true.
Liberia (founded by former American slaves) and Sierra Leone (founded by former Nova Scotia freed slaves) were noble but ultimately failed experiments to create democracy conducive to freedom and prosperity in West Africa.
As history would prove much later, descendents of slaves who decided to stay in America would eventually have access to the greatest opportunities for eductation, health care, and prosperity of any country in world history.
It's an interesting thought. Who would have benefitted most today if slavery had never occurred?

Tell me this. Does your question assume that no slavery also means no American Civil War?

It would be thriving way more than it is now

Just a lot of poor uneducated rednecks instead of poor uneducated rednecks with heritage.

The US would probably be up there with Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden when it comes to quality of life.

Well, the Civil War wasn't about slavery, so to answer your question: No.

We'd have seen more indian, Irish, German, Italian etc. Immigrants in the south. Agriculture was extremely labor intensive until the industrial revolution. Someone had to do the work. You'd have seen a feudal/sharecropper like society.
Probably would have been for the best.

Liberia (founded by former American slaves)
Amazing that they went in and set up an extremely similar system to what they left in the American South. Although they believed in racial equality (and therefore, no slavery), the Americo-Liberians dominated Liberian politics in, more or less, a caste system, vestiges of which survive to this day.
