What Was School Lunch Like in Your Day?

I'm 35. So I graduated way back in 99. I got to see schools change from the 80s to almost the 2000s. Got to see advanced and remedial classes phased out in lieu of blended classes. Gifted programs were cut. PE was made all weird and shite, instead of dodge ball and basketball there was square dancing.
Anyway, lots of changes, but school lunches were the most obvious.
In elementary and part of middle school, we had old black and white women cooking cheap but home cooked stuff every day. Hamburger with onion gravy, beef tips and rice, baked chicken thighs, chicken and dumplings, green beans, blackeyed peas, mashed potatoes, fried okra, cole slaw.
It was a damn meat and three every day for 1.50. They even throw in some jello or carrot cake for free if you smiled and said, "Thank you."
We even had a damn salad and soup bar in Elementary school.
By high school, it was all pizza, chicken fingers and french fries. I think we had taco salad on Thursday.
Quality of the food was godawful. shite was straight from Sysco or cheaper Sysco and was damn near inedible.
What's school lunch like now?

We had those weird plastic trays with the sections for things and we were allowed to get a metal (gasp) fork.
The milk came in a bag, not those mini cartons but a regular plastic bag. No printing on it at all. Just a bag with milk in it and you had to be careful pushing the straw in it because if you did it too hard, it would hit the bottom of the bag and then milk would leak all over the table while your friends laughed at you.
I don't remember much about the actual meals. I hated pizza day. It was like a cake with spaghetti sauce on it. The hamburgers were actually pretty good though, I do remember that.
There was always some fruit cup or jello thing with cut up fruit in it. Never ate that either.
I remember in middle school, we could get just a hamburger or a bag of french fries instead of the regular lunch. I felt so grown up.
It was .85 then. No idea what lunches are now. Has to be over a dollar.

I'm 28. It was something like this. IIRC there were 2 lines. 1 for a sandwich (chicken or burger) with fries and the meal which was stuff like shepherd's pie or spaghetti and meatballs with a roll and a side. Very very low quality. But it was just 1.50.
Some friends at other schools said that had stuff like dominoes or WoW everyday. Not us. I think seniors might have had to option of ordering something from off campus like once a month.

We had the hard plastic trays and real metal flatware. They even gave us butter knives!
I think it was high school we got those weird styrofoam things you had to triple up to keep them from breaking by the time you got to the table. And sporks...fricking sporks.

26-years-old
Graduated in 2009.
My mom would drop off food 3-4 times a week if not all five, but if I did have to eat then it was Crispitos all damn day.

We had some kind of greens every day. Turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, if it was green we had it. Also lots of sweet potatoes. And big yeast rolls. And I've still never had better chocolate sheet cake anywhere. We complained, but looking back they did a damn good job considering what they had to work with.

I forgot the niblet corn.
Oh lawd. Pizza day. Niblet corn. Lasagna with niblet corn. Taquitos with niblet corn. Hamburger steak. Sorry we are out of niblet corn.

Oddly enough, it's a fond memory now.
I remember it like it was yesterday though with those "bag o fries." They came in a big wax paper bag and we got ketchup packets from Sysco.
It always smelled nice in the cafeteria too. Not like something awesome was cooking but it just smelled good.
My niece is in the second grade now and I went with her to her school over the summer when they were having summer programs, painting, drawing, etc. But it was done in the school cafeteria, completely different school, same distinct smell.
When I got to high school, thankfully we had vending machines so I didn't venture into the cafeteria much at that point.
Funny memories.

It was actually pretty damn good in catholic school, grades K-8. The Italian food and the bread especially.

We would all line up going into the lunchroom to pay. Your name was already on a sheet and the lady would write down a P for paid, C for charged, or a check mark would already be beside the kids name with free lunch. It made easy targets of the poor kids cause everyone could see who got free lunch.

I also graduated in 2009 and I bought a case of crispitos from a food rep not long ago.
Get crispitos with that Mexican corn, cornbread, and extra melted cheese to mix your corn into and you were eating like a king
In HS we had:
-Mexican Line: Crispitos everyday and quesadillas or taco salad on alternating days.
-Rectangle Pizza line
-Chicken sandwich/ hamburger line: the spicy chicken sandwiches were awesome
-Homestyle line: with whatever meatloaf and mashed potatoes type stuff they were serving that day.
Middle School was all the same stuff but instead of all the lines they gave you a few different choices everyday
Elementary school still had the rectangle pizza and stuff, but it was mostly homemade stuff and every month they'd send out calander with what food would be served what day, you'd have two choices everyday and you could see in advance if you wanted to bring a lunch to school. They also tried to get creative and do themes for holidays and different weeks and stuff.
I have a sibling 10 years older and when they were at the same HS I went to all the lines I mentioned were different fast food. Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, McDonalds, KFC

The food was outstanding at the Catholic grade school in New Orleans that I attended in the 1970s.

High school, nasty food dropped on a tray and a box of milk, hopefully not lumpy. I usually just went to the vending machine

There's a gas station near where I live that makes them just like I remember in high school. I probably get them for lunch like once or twice a week

I'll tell this story. I went to Family Christian Academy in Baton Rouge, LA when I was in 7th grade. There was a fire in the kitchen that made it unusable. So everyday we had to trek across the landbridge on Bluebonnet Blvd. to eat at the Bible College cafeteria.
Well, they had hired this husband and wife from Germany to run the cafeteria. Professional chefs. They were part of the church. Pretty much seemed like an unlimited budget ($4-$5 per person) for lunch back in 97/98. So that's like $7-8 a kid per day today.
I have never had such great food in my life. It was all home cooked gourmet. The best Chicken and Dumplings I have ever eaten in my life. The best dessert, everyday 3-4 choices. The macaroni was to die for. Every kid gained weight and I mean that literally. Parents started complaining. The kids loved the lunch.
I'm 31 today and I still say, god damn. That was amazing lunch. It's stuck with me.
They fired/Germans left the church later that year and we went to subsidized state plans that had terrible lunch. Every kid hated it. They wouldn't allow to bring lunch from home.
But I remember the day...the year the Germans ruled the kitchen. And boy did we eat like it was V-Day, every day.

I'm only a couple of years older than you, so we had the same type of lunches. That being said, I always brought my own lunch. School lunches were shite, especially the "hamburgers." The plus side too to bringing your own lunch in high school is that you could eat just about anywhere outside.
