What started New Orleans on its downward trajectory?

Well into the 60’s it was on par with Houston and Atlanta and then just fell off the map. Did it start with moon landrieu or was it headed down prior?

You know the answer. The downward trajectory stopped in the early 2010s as there was a lot of gentrification from 2012-2016. That positive momentum has slowed considerably as of late due to the city's shitty economy and incompetent leadership.

Yep. NO had a chance post-Katrina to do some real good for itself. It blew that opportunity. Can't say I am surprised.

Most US port cities started a decline, or flatline, as air freight really got going in the 1970's, 80's and 90's. Moving things by boat to Memphis wasn't as efficient as flying it there to the Fedex hub.

I don't know that NOLA was ever a true peer to Atlanta in modern times, but it seems to have kept up with other port cities like Charleston and Savannah.
