My grandfather's was a few months ago. Other than my second cousin thumping his Bible instead of talking about my big pop, it was actually enjoyable. I think the context of the death is important.
He grew up in very, very rural Alabama, the son of a merchant farmer, during the Depression. Hussled pool halls from Birmingham to Knoxville while he was in middle and high school. Enlisted with the U.S. Army at age 15, two days after Pearl Harbor. Came home, went to the Rose Bowl, stole a car to get to Pasadena, got drunk and lost it. Started a cab service and automobile dealerships. Gambled like nobody's business. Hit on women a third his age. Drank bourbon like water. Best skeet shooter I've ever known. Gave my family the best goddamn seats in Bryant-Denny for 40 years.
frick. I miss that old coot. I was going to say that his funeral was almost celebratory, because he lived such an amazing life. I can't, though. Putting him in the ground, with that great big 101st seal on his cofffin, was probably the hardest thing I've ever done.
