It's not nit picky. You're title is wrong.
If you said "lose out on $60 billion" it would be right.
If you said "lose out on $60 billion" it would be right.

Now he's throwing in horrible analogies too?
People should nitpick (his word, not mine because it's not the correct word) this thread because the title of it is 100% inaccurate.

He had a 10% stake. Now he doesn't. And now that stake is worth 60 Billion. So did he actually have it? Or did he not have it?
I really just want to watch people squabble over the thread title now.

He never had the $60 billion. He lost out on the chance to have that money, but he never had the money to lose.

Of course he had it. Almost 40 years ago. And he sold it (I'm assuming for a huge profit at the time).
Missing out on money =/= losing it.
Losing a chance to make money =/= losing money either.
You're smarter than this...you're in finance for chrissakes.
ETA: I'd bet that if he did FMV calculations back then, he came out way ahead and made a great business decision.

If the "it" refers to the money, he absolutely did not have it.

If Microsoft shares decline 50% you, without a doubt, will hear the media saying Gates lost $100 billion. But did he really lose? Shares are the same

No squabbling, just an inaccurate title

I can't change the title now. These people are worked up. You included
Posted on 9/8/14 at 11:42 am to Broke
his 10% stake was never worth 60 billion, therefore he never lost 60 billion dollars
Posted on 9/8/14 at 11:43 am to Broke
Well that's not really similar at all. Gates still owns the shares. This apple guy doesn't.

His net worth decreased, yes

Bill Gates owns Microsoft (stock). So if that declines, then his wealth declines.
This dude sold off his 10% 40 years ago. You can't look back now and say he lost $60B. He lost out on a(n unknown) chance at $60B, sure...but that's not the same thing.
