I'm about to book the flight and hotel, is there anywhere closer I could fly into and stay within driving distance?

Not a whole lot man. I've spent some random time there and will be there again in June for family stuff.
I've had a pretty good time at Pershing Inn, an outdoor bar with texmex and the like. Pretty fun place.
There's a racetrack nearby. You can go up on the mountain and look out over the city. They have a minor league baseball team.

That'll cause a deep, burning pain in your side. And possibly a bullet deep in your chest. And you'll just get one kiss and a case of blue balls.

I thought El Paso was rated one of the best places to raise a family and that it's one of the safest cities?

Choppy's or however it is spelled sucks. Don't believe the hype. Stateline steakhouse is cool with a zoo onsite

And of course, their version of Bud's Broiler, Chico's Tacos. Expect diarrhea.

Its pretty safe from what I understand (much safer than NOLA), but they have been getting some bleed over from Juarez, which you sure as shite do not want to go to. The wife has relatives by marriage that are mexican and they don't go anywhere near Juarez anymore.
Its also considered one of the worst "foodie" cities in the entire country. They have TexMex/Mexican and...ummm...not much else.
