ETA: The 'Alabama' answers grossly overestimate the greater American public's disdain, or even awareness, of the state. This goes for any Southern state other than Florida, though.

Why is Alabama considered to be such a horrific state? Most of the women from there are beautiful and they seem extremely hospitable and clean. Also, Bear Bryant was a major civil rights pioneer who took on the governor and triumphed due to the state's all around love for college football.
I'm not sure why so many think Alabama is really that bad.

Popular perception, just as in the case for other Deep South states. There are plenty of problems, no question, but they are generally exaggerated by those who have never even spent a great deal of time in the South.

I would normally say Texas because of myriad factors ranging from arrogance of its inhabitants to its natives always trying to spread Texas to wherever they land (seriously, stop incessantly complaining about how the town/state YOU chose to live in doesn't have a [insert Texas chain restaurant]), but I've really come to hate Ohio.

Lots of hate for Ohio I see. I've lived in both South Georgia, where I actually grew to hate Alabamians, because they can't drive worth a lick. And Columbus is not a dying city. Cleveland? Sure. But a lot of people that leave Ohio end up back here for multiple reasons; I know I did.
