other than ones involving death or extreme physical disabilities
unexpected pregnancy? one later in life?
divorce?
loss of job?
realization that your career isn't for you?
debt? or a bad investment?
STD?
loss of a home (to a fire or natural disaster)?
losing your retirement/savings (like an Enron scenario)?

A drug addiction
solid
the worst addiction is gambling, in my experience
drugs take a long time to really frick you up (and ODing is rare and basically resigned to a few select drugs these days)
you can lose everything and be mid-6 figures in debt in a weekend with a gambling issue

Easily drug addiction or gambling addiction

Depends on what you do. Arrest/drugs if you are in healthcare. DWI if you're a truck driver.

Gambling addiction is easily worse than drug addiction. Easy to hide and can get you in huge trouble very quickly

Spending too much time on an addictive college message board?

Addiction
Depression
Divorce
Marriage and children CAN be a big obstacle if you're both self employed.

The situation like Enron you pointed out would be pretty brutal late in a career.

if insurance won't cover, I would say this is one of the tops....most people plan their life around having their house paid off by retirement time. if you have to start all over late in life, that would be disastrous...
another (and more common one) would be a major stock market crash late in your career...every time this happens, many older folks have to come out of retirement and go back to work...

A felony conviction pretty much ends your chance of having a successful, white collar career.

lawyer i know just found out his 45-year old wife is preggo. he's in his 60s
that's like taking out 3 of my student loans with a 20-year repayment without an option to repay early

It depends on the career? College and pro athetics appear to not be concerned with personal behavior, so you can do whatever you want and still have a job.
I would say drug/gambling addictions, as well as divorce/depression are high on the list for people with normal jobs.
