Driving down Dalrymple today and the small lake between the road and McKinley is almost entirely full of plant life. I've seen this in different parts around Lakeshore as well and the small lake across the road from the Ag center is pretty a has been.

What is this? And how do they fix it? You'd think at a place like LSU, they would know how to handle it. But then again, it's an Ag school so maybe they are doing it as part of a study.

Water hyacinth. It's invasive and they're trying to get rid of it.

Toss in 10 nutria, and within a year, there will be 1000s of them and zero aquatic vegetation.

Saw them clearing it out a couple weeks ago. I think the above posters are correct in that it is hyacinth.

There are many things considered invasive but that doesn't make them not normal. It's pretty prevalent these days even though the plant is indigenous to South America. It's definitely not abnormal to see.

No, not normal. This is American Lotus, Hyacinth and Water Lettuce. This invasive plant species among several others, though beautiful in their own special way, are an incredible nuisance & destroyer of the natural habitat. And most are challenging to eradicate. Chemicals aren't healthy and can't get them all for long enough. And money for biological control is in short supply. When they die, they deplete the oxygen and this causes fish kills. There is an organization of volunteers that are looking for help. Will find it and post it.

Saturday, July 23rd is the joint clean up the lakes effort with LSU and (TULIPA) The University Lakes Improvement and Preservation Assoc.

We currently are expecting ONLY 20 to 30 total volunteers. We will focus on cleaning up the areas that surround the lake shores and Corporate Canal.

If you are interested in working with us please email me or Dr. Josh Dean, Assistant Director of Campus Life-LSU. jdean15@lsu.edu 1-225-578-5160

If you have a canoe which you can use there are some areas on Corporate Canal and possibly one of the lakes where it would be helpful. If you are going to bring a canoe, please bring life jackets or flotation equipment. Please advise if you are going to bring a canoe so we can coordinate your meeting location.

Water, bug spray, sunscreen and tools will be provided. Dress for the heat including a hat. Wear sturdy shoes (no sandals).

You can join us clean up the lakes by emailing me, parrymattt@gmail.com.
