Which time? They were fighting off and on for something like 1200 years.

Since Vietnam is still called “Vietnam” and not “the province of Vietnam in southern China,” I assume China withdrew at some point.

I think you are thinking of what we consider the war in Vietnam.
China backed north Vietnam and didn't move into the country. However, they were the stage of counter-attack against the US forces.
Provided arms, tactics, and intelligence. But didn't want to overtly go against the US.
So.. if you are thinking in terms of this battle, Romania or Poland will be that spot for Ukraine as they fight Russia.

No, he’s referring to the late 70s war between China and Vietnam. (Vietnam was Soviet-aligned, and China wanted them Sino-aligned, so they invaded to install their own puppet.)

China invaded Vietnam in 1979 in an attempt to get them to withdraw from Cambodia. They drove to Hanoi, and then withdrew. Vietnam kept occupying Cambodian anyway.

The Vietnamese hate the Chinese. My best customers are Vietnamese woodworkers in Baton Rouge. According to them they kick the Chinese arse every time the Red Army advances into Vietnam. My father can tell you firsthand that the Vietnamese are tough as hell and a worthy adversary on the battlefield.

You sound like a certain US sprinter comparing her banning from the Olympics to the Russian Figure Skater's situation.

They were no where near Hà Noi. They were stuck in Cao Bang. That's 170 miles away.

China is going around buying(99yr lease) property in Vietnam. They're paying off the Vietnam political leaders.
