they extended the exception at the 11th hour and i think the LA license is good until 2018

Do you need a passport to drive from one state to the next? Why should you be required to have one to fly from one state to the next?

Yes. The Feds mandate certain requirements to accept driver's licenses for identification purposes for air travel. A number of states don't care and have not yet updated their licenses. The Feds keep delaying the application of these rules because implementing them will be a disaster, so it will just be a waiting game for years. At some point the states will comply and this will be forgotten.

It already is happening. Five states did not get an extension and either already or starting very soon their residents will not be able to use their state-issued driver's license as ID for federal purposes, including boarding a plane.
