I just got a phone call that a good friend of mine passed away last night at 33. He wasn't a drug user and he wasn't overweight and had no medical issues. They dont suspect suicide or anything. I guess we will know after the autopsy what caused it but what can a person do other than get their physical annually to attempt to prevent such things? Is it more we need EKG's, ultrasounds, and stress tests at a cardiologist or is it just something that isn't preventable?

it's the circle of life man. I am sorry for your loss but sometimes there are things that can't be controlled.

Probably nothing. I had a cousin die at 27 with no known cause. They said he rolled over in the morning to pet his dog on the floor and fell out of bed dead. He was newly married. Terrible situation.

Preexisting condition from birth? You can take medical tests all day every day and not catch what ends up killin you.

That's tough. Sorry man. I knew a few guys in high school that died like that- one to cancer, one to a car accident.

I am not sure what can be done to fix that. People that young are supposed to be more or less invincible.

at 33 with no other health concerns and if he seemed overall healthy, there's not much a dr would do other than blood work, a general wellness exam/physical.

Most likely. I had a friend die at 29 from a congenital circulatory condition. He had a knot of blood vessels in the base of his brain that just grew wrapped up around each other. One day the knot got too tight and burst, giving him an aneurysm.

Sorry for your loss.

I had a chic friend who was having stomach cramps, thought her period was coming on. Took some medicine went to bed and never woke up. She ended up having an aneurysm in her stomach while she was sleeping.

If it was HOCM(hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy), you can get an echo as a non-invasive test to diagnosis it.

As others have noted, you can't stop all causes. There's always some random thing that can get you.

A former running buddy miraculously survived having the inner lining of his jugular just peel off into the bloodstream. He was standing in front of a subway stop (Foggy Bottom metro for the curious) that is just a few yards from GWU hospital, one of the leading cardiac hospitals in the country. Nurses and doctors are walking around all the time there on their way to/from work, so he had medical help within seconds and was in surgery basically as quickly as possible.

If not for that, he'd have been dead very quickly.

You're right. My heart condition that came within a whisker of killing me this past November was from a defect in my heart that had been there since birth. But growing up I played sports, even joined the army and never knew I had a ticking time bomb in my chest. It had been there for 46 years and only last summer did symptoms start to show.
