I have a coworker that fits OP's coworker's description to a T. Everyone appreciates a workhorse, but when the constant self-promoting antics never stop it totally cancels out the good that they do and breeds contempt among everyone else. At first we thought our boss was really dumb because she kept entertaining this person, but we all soon realized that the boss was just using her till she burned out.

If your boss is worth a shite, he will easily see through this. As a director, I personally hate suck ups and make little 'funny' comments to try and give hints.
Oh, and if he is doing extra work and you are a frickstick surfing TD all day, then maybe you should take a few notes.
