This afternoon I was setting the combination on a newly purchased briefcase. I set what I thought were the numbers but actually moved the tumblers accidentally before the process was complete. The lock was now set and locked with an unknown combination.

I go online and start reading up on methods to possibly pick the lock. Indications are to hold the button and turn the wheels to feel for tighness and help determine the combo.

I am holding the button with my thumb and turning the dials with my index finger with my eyes closed. The lock suddenly pops open.

The combination: the area code for my location.

The area code is very different than the 3 numbers I was trying to set for the combination. The original combination for the new briefcase was 0-0-0.

Sounds like you're too stupid to need a briefcase with a combination lock on it.

Thankfully, you're lucky.

Assuming each digit ranges from 0-9. Could be true but we just have to assume.

Actually, it's 1 in 1000. You forgot about the possible combination 0-0-0.

10 possibilities for 3 different dials.

10 x 10 x 10 = 1000.

That is right, but you need to think there is no way to have a blank number...the suitcase always needs to be on a combination. The first one is a freebie.

999 different guesses need to be made.

No. That is what he changed it away from.

In fact we can probably safely assume that no digit is 0 since he probably changed each digit away from 0. I'd start with 555 and work out in both directions for each digit. Probably would take fewer than 500 guesses.

Tonight do 550 to 599. Tomorrow do 500 to 549. Next two nights cover the 600s and then the next two the 400s.

Will likely have it cracked within a week or so.

The correct combination appeared for me in roughly 15 minutes and I was rolling all 3 dials with a single finger randomly.
