What Are the Chances to Transfer into LSU Law from Southern Law?

Good friend of mine just got into Southern Law's class of 2020, and is already feeling the stink of mediocrity. His plan is apparently to transfer into LSU as a 2L.
Besides having to have stellar grades, which you just can never really predict in law school, I figured that most of the class would probably like to do that, so his chances are even more slim.
Who knows the inside track on the possibility of this? When I was at LSU Law, rumors abounded that there was an unwritten policy not to accept transferees from Southern. We had a few who would attend our classes on some sort of exchange program, but other than that, I never knew of anyone who transferred.
Maybe the policy has changed since admissions are down?

Why doesn't he just wait a year or retake the LSAT?

So he does in fact have a pulse.

If you went to LSU for law school, then you should know better than encourage your friend to attend Southern law.

He doesn't really have a choice. GPA is pretty much on par with Southern's average, so I'm pretty sure he could never get in to LSU outright no matter what his LSAT is.
And while he could probably come up, I doubt it's possible to get the score he would need to counter his 3.0 GPA.
Besides, if it lets you sit for the Louisiana Bar exam, I think he should do it. He'll have to bust his arse in Barbri since he won't know anything about law, but it's all about punching a ticket.

This. LSU had their biggest 1L class in a few years this year; can't imagine they're looking to take many transfers unless attrition becomes an issue.
Also, I imagine the reason your friend didn't get into LSU is because of LSAT or GPA. It's not like they're just going to ignore those when considering transfers (although they would certainly carry less weight than 1L grades).

A 3.0 and a 155ish score would get him into LSU.

Why would he want to leave Southern's law program?? If anything LSU students will be tranferring to SULC once they realize LSU law just teaches theory and zero practical skills.

This isn't true.

And this is terrible advice. His goal should be to get a job, not be able to sit for the bar exam. It's difficult enough to find a good job out of law school right now, it's even more difficult if you went to Southern.

It's actually not that uncommon. There's a handful of Southern transfers here right now. However, most Southern transfers come from the night program because LSU does not allow students to work during their 1L year. This causes some people to do the Southern Part Time Night program and work during their 1L year and then transfer to LSU for their 2L year so they can keep their job and their income.

I've heard LSU has only taken one transfer in its entire long and storied history and that was one John Randall Trahan.

Your "friend" should roll the dice and hit The Yard. What's the worse that could happen?

But that would just get him in. At SULC he could get a full scholarship AND a far better legal education!

Is Southern Law better than LSU now? When I was there I had friends at Southern who said it was terrible, but maybe they've turned it around and will be leading the State soon? Haven't been keeping my eye on it.
I checked last year's bar exam results and it looks like that hasn't yet translated into the figures for Southern...
I'm not sure if they've ever broken 40% on the overall passage rate. Or at least they didn't when I was in law school.

This isn't true. The LSAT is given much more weight than a GPA. If he can wait a year, tell him to bust his balls and take another crack at the LSAT.
If he has to get in this year, it's not impossible, but he better be one of the top kids in his class. Tell him to go into the admissions office at LSU to sit and talk with the dean of admissions--he'll lay out everything that your friend has to do whether it's to get in as a transfer or as a 1L next year.
