I know nothing about how forest fires naturally start but if I were guessing I would say that over a dozen individual fires breaking out simultaneously across a few hundred square miles with no apparent cause would not be my first thought.

Forgive my ignorance here, but wouldn't there typically be storm clouds over an area that's getting pummeled by lightning in ~15 different spots at the same time that's starting fires all over the place?
And wouldn't that same satellite imagery record those clouds vs smoke from a fire?
