What is a reasonable price for having a 40 gal water heater installed? I got quoted at $1046 which seemed high to me. Should I get another quote or is that the going rate?

Idk anything about it but I watched my dad put one in the other day. It didn't take him long at all.

Way overpriced. I bought a water heater at a plumbing supply store and had a plumber put it in for about $100. (FYI, I had him put on screw/threaded fittings for the water line and will change it myself in the future).

what is the quote breakdown?

elec or gas?

replacing an old one?

I love the extreme vagueness of these question threads.

a 40 gal elec water heater is ~$350, not sure what "parts" are needed and I think lowes does a same day install for ~$200

Electric 40 gals on lowes website range from $270 to $500, so I'm guess yours is around $400. That's $600 in labor for what will take at most 2 hours. That's $300/hr for something you could probably google and do yourself.

Your call.

Just depends on the brand he's quoting and whether it's gas or electric. And where the WH is located and how hard it is to get to. For a $1,000 he's probably only making $200 or so.

Oh I can't read, if it's a gas water heater that is still pretty ridiculous.

40 Gal gas and yes replacing an existing one.

Unfortunately I'm not nearly handy enough to try and do it myself when dealing with gas. I'd prob blow my house and family up.

Even a 40 gallon gas water heater with wi-fi controls cost less than 800 dollars. So, yes that is a high quote.

Why would you need wifi for a hot water heater?

Some ridiculous control and remote monitoring system that they put on to charge you extra money.

Oh and it's just water heater, why would you need to heat hot water?

Hijack

Has anyone here gone from water heater to tankless water system? If so, is this a job that can be done yourself or should a plumber be called? My current tank is gas

Do it yourself. It's not hard at all. I just replaced mine a couple months ago. Hardest part is not making a mess draining the old one.

All you have to do is turn one gas valve right by the heater. It is really easy. And surely you have a dad or friend that has done this before. No reason to overpay by $500-$600. It's an at most 2 hour job.

ETA: Do I finally have a serial downvoter? Congrats at winning in life
