2 friends and kid are going to DC in early January. Recommendations on top Smithsonian Museums/historical places to see if there for just 3 days?

Natural History and Air and Space.

American History as well (has the pop culture stuff).

Newseum if you're into that. Holocaust if you want to be depressed but moved.

Read up on the Metro. Best train/subway system in the U.S. Makes getting around cheap and easy.

Bonus: Find out if any protests or marches are going on. There's usually something on the weekend. Someone's always protesting cruelty to animals or foreign policy or something. Something very "D.C." to experience.

Stand on top of the Washington Monument, take in all you survey, and try to figure out how we can again make DC a sleepy little village on the Potomac

The zoo is also smithsonian (completely free) and it is almost like walking around a big park with exhibits of animals all around, but it is kind of far away from the national mall.

Arlington cemetery is a very nice walk as well, it is huge. Can see JFK's gravestone as well as the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Food here can get really good as well. If you go check out the masonic temple at 16th and S st. just a couple blocks from there is really great nouveau style food.

Shopping isn't the best but you can go to Georgetown for that (as well as food) or chevy chase village on the northwest border of maryland and DC.

You can do a lot in 3 days here.

Just be aware that the Capitol is under construction with scaffolding all over the dome, and the national cathedral is also under construction.

Take the kid to the Spy Museum. The Newseum would be another good one. Not a 'fun' time but the Holocaust museum is an essential stop.

Totally depends on how old the kid is: spy museum will suck for anyone over the age of 13 and the holocaust museum has a separate portion for kids as well.

ETA: Kid is 8 he will love the spy museum.

Spy Museum you have to pay. Don't do it.

Also, go to the old post office and go up to the top. Nice view.

If you do it right, you shouldn't have to touch your car at all. The subway is excellent.

Yea. That's usually how it works with museums.

Might not want to do Holocaust then.

National Cathedral is great and won't take all afternoon. Take binoculars and you'll be able to see the famous Darth Vader gargoyle sculpture high up ( LINK)

Arlington Cemetery and the Changing of the Guard is impressive. The Natural History museum is good also.
