Wanting to settle down in a place like Hawaii before retirement, thoughts?

I'm 26, just got my first real job out of college.
I've always been drawn to water, particularly the beach. It's always been a dream of mine to live on a beach, isolated from everyone with no distractions.
It's not something I can honestly do anytime soon. I'm talking 40s..50s.. but I want to live in Hawaii. I know the cost of living is ridiculous compared to Louisiana. I know I won't make what I'm currently making. But I don't care.
I know this dream will probably be shattered when/if I get married and have kids, but It's something I am really gearing towards.
tl;dr

Open a tiki bar on the beach. Use an antenna to catch local channels .

probably..maybe not though if you're smart with your money
I want to have a summer house on Whidbey Island in Washington when I retire.
I don't want to live there full time or anything because I'm sure I'll want to live somewhere near my kids/grandkids, but a summer house would be nice

I just graduated. I did electrical work (Residential and I&E) before I decided to go to college.

I've probably been to HI about 150 times,I love it and never get tired of it but I have the ability to come and go as I please. If you want to live comfortably there you either need to be knocking down some righteous coin or have already made it before you move there. I still haven't ruled it out,

Have you ever been to Hawaii? It's paradise but its a string of relatively small islands and it costs a metric arse load to fly to the mainland. You'll eventually get tired of seeing the same places over and over. There are plenty of places with great beaches here. Plus getting up at 7am to watch early NFL games would suck after a while.

Go to the Philippines instead. Same scenery and weather, dramatically different cost of living. You can live like a king for $1,000 a month. They love Americans... Just stay away from the Terrorists.

Be prepared to get into a lot of fights, especially if you're white. If you're not local it's gonna be rough, at least for a while.

Hawaii is not unattainable like some act but it definitely takes a solid plan and backup plan if you've never lived on an isolated island, and most haven't. I lived out there for several years and never had island fever but it really gets to some people.

Why Hawaii? What about St. Croix?

Go visit Isla Mujeres (Mexico) and Ambergris Caye (Belize) once you begin to get hair in your armpits and around your privates.
We are in the process of buying a place on the latter, check out my reviews of each on the travel board. For us, each place has its own appeal and unique identity while both are bound by land (obviously).
Goddammit, thanks for the Monday frustration that we're not already there.

I didn't have one altercation in 4 years. Not saying it doesn't happen, but for the most part, don't be an a-hole, and you'll be fine.

if it's your DREAM, and you are adamant about it, then live minimally while saving. You can live in a studio, cut out all of the amenities, not eat out, no cable, take public transit, and you will have the money you need when you are ready.
You don't have to be single if you can find someone that shares your vision, and would follow suit on living at minimal levels. She isn't a unicorn per se, but she's rare, but still out there.

I have not. I'm generally speaking of an Island..but I'm not sure what the living conditions or quality of safety is like in other places.
