I will be going to Cartagena in March for a wedding and will be there for 6 days. Curious if anyone has any personal experience visiting the general area and could provide some recs on restaurants, bars, things to do, excursions, etc?

Probably looking to take a day trip to the Rosario Islands and/or Parque Nacional Tayrona. Anyone experience anything else worth checking out?

Thanks

Don't fall for the "Does this smell like scopolamine to you?" trick.

I have a friend in the Secret Service. I'll ask him where the best hookers and blow are located. They're experts at that shite.

The old city in Cartagena is the best place to go being there the first time. It is so damn similar to the New Orleans French Quarter (Spanish artitecture, atmosphere, street performers, etc.). In fact, I'd probably say it is safer and cleaner than the french quarter.

There are a ton of shops and restaurants to see and a lot of great historical sites (churches, ramparts, cannons). The old city in surrounded by a old fortified wall right next to the carribiean sea, so it's spectacular at sunset.

There is also some museums and old castles just outside the old city, but it's a little rough past that, but Club Havana is a worthwhile visit.

Rent an armored car. Saw the police shoot and kill two carjackers there but that was back in the 90's. Right outside a bar. People in the bar just kept drinking and partying as if nothing unusual had just taken place fifty feet away.

^This

One of the best hidden gems in the Western Hemisphere, historically and talent-wise as well.

It looks and feels like Spain.

Keep your head on a swivel just like you would anywhere else in Colombia, definitely have a running buddy or two.

My brother-in-law went about 6 months ago, I'll talk to him this week sometime and post what he says. He brought me back a figurine of "Fat Lady":

ETA: He had zero issues with crime or anything of that nature.

Her response:

"Take a tour of the castle and go through the tunnels. Have a romantic dinner at the fort at night and walk around it after. And Rosario Islands are pretty, my uncle camps out there a lot. And take the Chiva, it's like a party bus that goes around the whole city."

ETA: ^ Her family has Botero figurines and paintings all over the house

Also she said the Chiva is about 40,000 pesos ($20) and it'll drive you around all night

ETA2: "Tell him MAKE SURE he has fish out by the beach. But they'll probably take advantage if he doesn't speak any Spanish at every place he goes."

They gonna overcharge you baw

Catagena is safer than New Orleans.

You can stay at the Santa Clara or the Santa Teresa, both ancient monasteries converted into luxury hotels. There are also many nice boutique hotels.

You can fly to Cartagena direct from Miami, which I HIGHLY recommend. You'll have to purchase a flight from Miami to Cartagena on Avianca, and a separate flight from NO to Miami.

The Rosario Islands are beautiful. The more distant ones are nicer than the close ones. You can arrange a dive trip if you like. The city beaches are not very nice. Hotel pools are usually nice. The Santa Clara has a pool on the roof which is nice.

Lots of good restaurants.

You are going to have a fantastic trip. Colombians are fun people. Hang out with the Colombians in the wedding party and you will have a blast. It will be a lit easier for you to meet Colombian women if you are hanging out with their friends and cousins.

And, as a general rule, plan on everyone being an hour late.
