The Dan DeCarlo pin-up and gag book has been out for years. Also similar books by Jack Cole (creator of Plastic Man) and Joe Shuster (co-creator of Superman).
These guys were paid by the page with zero benefits. They'd take any job that would pay them.
Hugh Hefner (a former cartoonist) was a savior to some of these guys, giving them high profile work in Playboy.

Yes, the history of these guys is very interesting. Dare I say today we won't see anything like that.
