It is, The Stolen Valor Act i believe. Not sure the specifics though

ETA: Looks like stolen valor refers to medals earned in combat.

Wearing a special forces patch when you didn't earn it wouldn't count? Seems like it should to me

Not just that, it should count for anyone attempting to use veteran status to gain an advantage for anything.

No, they can't. Certain units used to be able to wear Army unit patches (big red 1, 101st etc)when they were attached to them but that was back in the BDU/DCU days. When the AF came out with the ABU all that went away.

This guy got outed on the stolen valor page already and issued an apology last week I believe.

As bad as all that is, he would still probably be better than the current mayor, Cedric Glover.
