The A-B-C islands around here have 1,000-1,500 lb brown bears, and the densest bear populations in the world. Admiralty Island which is about 5 miles away has more than one per sq. mile. The Russians were afraid to set foot on the island when they explored this area and called it "Fear Island." We deer hunt there, and the bears have learned a gunshot means fresh meat.
