LINK

quote:

"Not only are entire galaxies magnetic, but the faint delicate threads joining galaxies are magnetic, too,"said Bryan Gaensler, Director of the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics, University of Toronto, and a co-author on the paper. "Everywhere we look in the sky, we find magnetism."

Amazing to think about really. Not only do entire galaxies have their own magnetic field, but the very faint gas lines between them do as well.

Sometimes I like to get really stoned and watch documentaries on outer space. It can get intense

Have an upvote sir! I'm into space and shite, but really wanted to move away from reading the monument thread. Thanks for something cool.

Magellanic Clouds

The Magellanic Clouds (or Nubeculae Magellani[2]) are two irregular dwarf galaxies visible from the southern hemisphere; they are members of the Local Group and are orbiting the Milky Way galaxy. Because they both show signs of a bar structure, they are often reclassified as Magellanic spiral galaxies. The two galaxies are:

Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), approximately 160,000 light-years away
Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), approximately 200,000 light years away

I don't understand space and I definitely don't understand magnets but this seems pretty cool.

Wonder if we could utilize that for space travel.

It boggles the mind to think that somewhere in one of those midget galaxies, there are space people living in their tiny space homes looking at our galaxy.

And probably looking at space porn on their midget galaxy space internet.

I don't see how, I would imagine the actual forces although vast are also extraordinarily weak.

The Galactic magnetic field as revealed by Planck: LINK

quote:

ESA's Planck satellite has produced the first all-sky map of the polarized emission from dust at submm wavelengths. Compared with earlier ground-based and balloon-borne observations this survey is an immense step forward in sensitivity, coverage, and statistics. It provides new insight into the structure of the Galactic magnetic field and the properties of dust, as well as the first statistical characterization of one of the main foregrounds to CMB polarization.

Here we summarize the main results from the data analysis by the Planck Consortium on the structure of the Galactic magnetic field. We hope the release of the data to the science community at large will trigger many more studies.

Amazing picture if you think about what it signifies. The orange/red band in the center is the galactic plane of the Milky Way, the swirling lines being magnetic fields.

Planck Satellite

Planck was a space observatory operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) from 2009 to 2013, which mapped the anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at microwave and infra-red frequencies, with high sensitivity and small angular resolution. The mission substantially improved upon observations made by the NASA Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Planck provided a major source of information relevant to several cosmological and astrophysical issues, such as testing theories of the early Universe and the origin of cosmic structure; as of 2013 it has provided the most accurate measurements of several key cosmological parameters, including the average density of ordinary matter and dark matter in the Universe.

Up vote from me.

But watch out for the tRumpoids, to whom this is clearly another sad fake news story about scientific stuff they'll never understand.

Some super genius years form now will figure out how to use those magnetic fields for propulsion in space. Think about that for a minute.

Dullard. Every theoretical physicist on the planet will tell you R's fund the sciences more than D's.

They also don't turn NASA into a middle east outreach program.

Take your dumbass back to PT. Dumb fricking dummy
