AMITE - After Amite High School’s valedictorian was denied the right to walk across the stage because of his facial hair, some state leaders have come together to give the young man a graduation of his own.

Andrew Jones had a 4.0 GPA and was top of his class at Amite High, however teachers wouldn’t let him walk at the 2016 spring graduation ceremony because administrators said his facial hair violated school policy.

A statement from state leaders including Rep. Katrina Jackson says Jones was unfairly excluded from a ceremony that should have been a highlight of his young adult life. People who support Jones say a beard shouldn’t detract from what was an exemplary academic performance from the young man.

"They were just straight… you either got to shave or you ain't going to graduate," Jones said at the time.

Teachers blocked Jones at the doorway of the ceremony and told him that he could not enter the graduation. He was forced to sit in the crowd with his family as his peers walked across the stage. School administration said Jones was warned on three prior occasions concerning his facial hair.

Dumb rule but it was a rule. Guess he didn't want to walk too bad. Sick of this type of shite. Shave your face and get your diploma and move on with your life. The real world is about to slap him in his bearded face, really hard.

Glad the school stood their ground and did not let him walk. Rules are in place for a reason. He knew he had to shave and should have. Little shits like this need to learn that they are not above the law or rules.
Damn the state officials that held a special graduation for him. I hope they are not reelected.

Is high school graduation really still a big deal? I honestly do not remember mine at all. I think it was at the UNO Lakefront arena. I assume someone gave a speech. Apparently I was handed a diploma.

This is actually very strange to me. I think it is the result of different family dynamics among the social classes.

Those of lesser wealth see graduating high school as a mile stone of independence. In the areas they live in, just getting youngsters to be obedient is a HUGE struggle.

The rich feel similar in regards to independence, but they know that true economic prosperity and civil obedience dictate that high school is simply required for all students. It is designed for anyone to pass it.

misleading title lacks crucial information. Welcome to the facial hair policy of any catholic high school in southern louisiana.

I see zero reason why that little fricker deserved a special ceremony. He blatantly and knowingly defied school policy. Screw him.

No facial hair is obviously sexist since it only affects males.
