The M1 Abrams is a third-generation American main battle tank designed by Chrysler Defense (now General Dynamics Land Systems) and named for General Creighton Abrams. Conceived for modern armored ground warfare and now one of the heaviest tanks in service at nearly 68 short tons (62 metric tons), it introduced several modern technologies to United States armored forces, including a multifuel turbine engine, sophisticated Chobham composite armor, a computer fire control system, separate ammunition storage in a blowout compartment, and NBC protection for crew safety. Initial models of the M1 were armed with a 105 mm M68 gun, while later variants feature a license-produced Rheinmetall 120 mm L/44 designated M256.
quote:
M1A2 (Baseline): Production began in 1992 and initial operating capability achieved in 1993.[195] (77 built for the U.S. and more than 600 M1s upgraded to M1A2, 315 for Saudi Arabia, 1,005 for Egypt, 218 for Kuwait). The M1A2 offers the tank commander an independent thermal sight and ability to, in rapid sequence, shoot at two targets without the need to acquire each one sequentially, also second-generation depleted uranium armor components.

Hey, there is a great improvement in the weathering and panel lines!

I went very lite on the weathering on this one. Really all I did was highlight with Tamiya black panel accent. I wanted it to have a crisp squared away looked instead of rode hard and put up west. This one is a commission piece that I tasked to do. As soon as I get the display case, it will be shipping out.

In Desert Storm we called those camel crushers.

I have 172 models on display in my model room right now. Over my life I’d say I’ve built probably somewhere over 200.

You got a creeper peeking at you through the blinds.

I didn’t even notice. He’d have to be awful tall or have a tall ladder.

As a civilian contractor I was allowed to sit in one at Fort Carson and start the turbine. At 6’2” tall, it was very cramped. Hats off to the men who drive those.

I had to do this one in this specific color scheme as it’s how 3-67 Armor’s vehicles are currently done. If you like winter camo, here’s some I’ve done in the past.

I'm 6'1" and the only time it was too bad was as a loader. It's hard to hit the knee switch, pop out a 120mm round, flip it, and slam it in to the main gun breech...especially when the leader's hatch is closed. When it's open, at least you're not banging the top of your CVC helmet on the roof anyway.
I could still tell you every piece of equipment on that thing, the parts of the power pack (forward, mod, rear mod, transmission, main hydraulic pump, etc). I could still coach a bunch of fricking new guys how to take off, replace and put tension in the track, tell you every single fire command and battle drill.
I spent over 20 years of my life on that piece of equipment and your life depended on knowing how to fight it and maintain it.

Well don’t as always Vader.

And you had 4 seconds to load and arm the main gun. Doesn’t sound like a lot of time to non-tankers. But any loader worth his salt could do it well under 4. And I know what you mean by room being an issue. And other than the TC, the loader has way more room than the gunner or driver. I still have my old CVC shell. The top is quite scratched up and I’m not as tall as you.
My personal favorite position was driver. Being a gunner was fun. Being a TC was stressful. But being the driver was awesome. That seat was the most comfortable spot on the tank. You could get some good sleep in the driver’s position.

Looking at the monotone green shade is the U.S. Army moving away from the three color nato camouflage scheme for other than desert deployments?
Nice work as always.

To be honest, I don’t know which way they’re going. Some units have gone back to OD green, some still jace desert tan. It’s a hodgepodge as far as I can tell. I wish they’d go back to the three tone green, brown, and black we had back in the late 80s.
